In 1977, Barry Hampshire drove, with two friends, from London to Saudi Arabia, through areas that have since become mired in war and tragedy. Their route crossed Western and Eastern Europe, the Eastern Mediterranean and the Middle East. Along the way, they had revealing interactions with Christians and Muslims, men and women, young and old. He describes what he saw back forty plus years ago and how he felt, at that time. He also reflects on today’s situation in those sections of the journey, which can’t be repeated today.
Being 28, when he took the journey, he found lessons to be learned that have influenced who he has become today. Later travels in Arabia allowed him to more deeply understand life and people, all of which contributed to his becoming a more dedicated volunteer, helping others, now that he has retired and when he is not writing.
